South African Spelling Bee
The South African Spelling Bee is a flagship national literacy initiative of the A Better Africa Foundation, a registered non-profit and public benefit (Section 18a) organisation committed to improving reading outcomes and educational opportunities for young people across South Africa.
Since its inception in 2010, the South African Spelling Bee has grown into one of the country’s leading platforms for promoting literacy, language development, and academic excellence. What began as a competition has evolved into a powerful national movement that inspires a love of reading and celebrates the richness of South Africa’s linguistic diversity.
As a premier national competition, the South African Spelling Bee identifies and nurtures the linguistic talents of learners from all nine provinces. Through a structured pathway—from school and district levels to provincial and national finals—learners are given the opportunity to develop confidence, discipline, and mastery of language in a supportive and aspirational environment.
The programme is proudly implemented in partnership with the Department of Basic Education and forms part of broader national efforts to improve literacy outcomes. It is also aligned with the work of the National Reading Collective, supporting the development of reading for meaning while promoting multilingualism, including all official South African languages and South African Sign Language.
Beyond competition, the South African Spelling Bee plays a vital role in building a culture of reading in schools and communities. It actively involves educators, parents, and caregivers, creating spaces where language is celebrated not only as an academic skill, but as a tool for identity, expression, and opportunity.
Our top performers go on to represent the country at the African Spelling Bee, and the upcoming Spelling BeeWorld Championships, where they compete alongside the best young spellers from across the continent and globe. Through this platform, South African learners engage in meaningful cultural exchange while showcasing the excellence, diversity, and potential of our nation.

At the South African Spelling Bee, we strive to be a truly South African Spelling Bee—one that not only includes all official languages of the country, but also recognises and celebrates the rich linguistic heritage of the more than 25 languages spoken by immigrant and indigenous communities across South Africa.
